SOS for Senior Caregivers Experiencing Guilt: Let Caring

Most people are juggling a lot of things these days, and caregivers often feel like they’re juggling knives and flaming swords on top of it. It’s common to feel overburdened and guilty when you’re providing care for a loved one, whether that person is your spouse or your parent.

Guilt can manifest in many ways. Maybe you feel like you’re not spending enough quality time with your loved one. You may experience guilt if you’re thinking about an assisted living facility for your loved one. You feel guilty because your loved one’s dementia-fueled repetitions made you snap. Or perhaps your feelings of guilt stem from spending less time with your own children in order to care for the senior in need.

The most important things to keep in mind are: You’re doing the very best you can, and it’s perfectly normal to seek assistance.

Let’s take a closer look at that statement. First: You’re doing the best you can. You may agree, but do you really believe it? When you first experience feelings of guilt, remind yourself:

  • I am doing the best I can.
  • My loved one appreciates me, even if he or she can’t or won’t say so. Mistakes will happen.
  • I can’t control or fix the past, but I can control how I feel about it.
  • I am doing enough.

It’s a good idea to place these affirmations on notes in prominent areas around the house, such as on the refrigerator or inside the medicine cabinet. Or, use the calendar app on your cell phone to schedule a favorite affirmation as a daily pop-up reminder.

Second: It’s okay to seek senior caregiving help, whether it’s professional help through an expert in-home care agency like Caring Solutions, or from relatives, or friends. Let’s start with your loved one’s network of friends. We’ve all heard from well-meaning friends, “Let me know if there’s anything I can do.” But how often do we follow up and ask?

Your mother’s friends from her card club probably do want to help, but they might be holding back because they don’t want to step on your toes. Contact them and ask for specific assistance. “Could you come visit with Mom every Wednesday for an hour?” You’ll likely be surprised at how willing people are to pitch in — they just need to know what you need.

Nearby siblings and other relatives might also just need to be given a specific task. Remember, if you can receive help for even a few small weekly tasks, you will feel less overwhelmed. Maybe Aunt Sue can take Dad to his weekly physical therapy appointment, or Cousin Joe can take Grandma along to church.

If siblings and other relatives live far away, ask them to handle tasks that can be done over the phone or online. Need a list of adult day care facilities? Someone to seek out the most affordable pharmacy for your parent’s prescriptions? Delegate those tasks.

Or even better, request the help of a professional home care agency such as Caring Solutions. Caring Solutions can assist with senior care services such as:

  • Meal planning and preparation
  • Regular respite care
  • Transportation to appointments, shopping and events
  • Light housekeeping
  • Companionship
  • Specialized care for persons with dementia
  • Connections to community resources and caregiver support groups

Which Option Is Best: Senior Care at Home, or Assisted Living?

October 13, 2016 Sandra Sergeant

Home is where the heart is, and the vast majority of seniors’ hearts are set on staying at home throughout the aging process, instead of moving to an assisted living facility or nursing home – as many as 90% of them, according to AARP. And

who can blame them? The familiarity of comforting surroundings, the freedom to come and go as you wish, the ability to prepare whatever meals you’d like whenever you want them are worth more than gold.

But while it sounds wonderful in theory, there are also some concerns to consider as well:

  •  Will the senior be safe?

  •  How will he or she get around when driving, or even walking, becomes difficult?

  •  What happens if the senior becomes ill or injured and no one’s nearby to help?

Thankfully, it’s easier now than ever before for seniors to remain safe and well cared for at home. These tips can help you take the necessary steps to ensure your senior loved one is prepared for these and other senior care needs, now and in the years to come:

Assess the home, both inside and out, from the perspective of the senior’s safety. Check to make sure:

o Grab bars are in place near the bathtub and toilet.
o Throw rugs and other tripping hazards are removed.
o There’s plenty of lighting, including in hallways and stairways. o Commonly used items are within easy reach.
o Emergency numbers are posted in a prominent location.

Create a transportation plan, so it’s ready to implement when driving is no longer possible:

o Look into public transportation options that are available and easily accessible. o Brainstorm a list of trusted people the senior can contact for transportation when

needed: friends, family members, neighbors, religious organizations, local senior

centers, Caring Solutions, etc.
Provide the senior with access to the technology that can be used in an emergency to call

for help when he or she is alone, such as a PERS (personal emergency response system).

Keep in mind that the best way to ensure seniors remain safe and well cared for at home is by partnering with a professional senior care agency, such as Caring Solutions of Enfield, CT. Our caregivers are experienced and have been trained in providing personal care services, transportation, meal preparation, and companionship, and are available for as much or as little care as needed.

Our first step is to create an individualized care plan to address the senior’s specific needs and wishes, and then we continuously monitor that plan and modify as needs change – ensuring that the senior remains safe and is able to live life to the fullest, where it’s most comfortable: right at home. Contact us at 877-369-5602 to learn more about our in-home senior care solutions.

    Distress

    September 26, 2016

Helping a loved one withpersonal care needs, such as bathing, dressing and using the bathroom, can be uncomfortable for the person needing care as well as the one providing the care. It’s difficult to set aside modesty and allow someone to help with basic tasks when you’re at your most vulnerable. And at times, older adults, especially those with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia, can become overly distressed while receiving help with these

necessary tasks, to the point that it may result in a battle of wills.

These outbursts can be triggered by a variety of causes, which vary based on each individual, but in general, they may be a result of:

Loss of control. Independence and autonomy may feel like they’re slipping away for seniors, and keeping control over the most basic functions becomes critical to them.

What can help: Let the senior maintain as much control as possible, and come up with compromises instead of pushing the senior too far. If she insists on wearing an unmatching outfit, for example, allow her that freedom.

Adherence to tradition. Standards of hygiene were far different when today’s seniors were younger, and a weekly bath, rather than a daily one, was normal. A senior whose memory is unclear may revert back to those days and balk at the idea of a daily bath or shower.

What can help: Using positive, motivating language can sometimes encourage the senior to see things from a different

perspective. For example, use bath time as a springboard to a fun activity, such as a lunch date for which she certainly will want to look and feel her best.

Fear of the experience. Bathing and dressing for older adults can result in feelings of fear, and often rightfully so, as they think of the risk of falling while in the tub or while getting onto or off of the toilet. Some seniors with dementia also become fearful of the sound of running water, or may become distressed by the feel of water that’s too warm or too cool.

What can help: In-home safety modifications, such as grab bars beside the tub and toilet and elevated toilet seats, will reduce the risk of falling. Using a soft, soothing voice and explaining each step of the process in advance can also help.

Keeping the following in mind before you begin daily personal care tasks can also help keep outbursts at bay:

  •  Alwaysallowtheseniorasmuchindependenceaspossibletoenhance self-esteem.

  •  Ensure optimum comfort for the older adult by making sure the room is warm, using comfortable, calming lighting, and maintaining as much privacy as possible.

  •  Layclothingoutfortheolderadultintheorderthateachpieceshould be put on, gently giving guidance for each step if needed.

At Caring Solutions of Connecticut, we know how hard it can be for a family member to provide personal care tasks for a senior loved one, and are here to help with fully trained and experienced caregivers who make sure that each senior feels comfortable, safe and respected. As adults age, the numbers who decide to stay in their own homes is increasing. They want to be able to enjoy an independent lifestyle instead of being confined to a retirement home. Home modifications can range from simple solutions such as rearranging furniture to major construction by lowering countertops in the kitchen or adding wheelchair ramps. Home Care Services near Avon, CT– How to Survive Colder Weather

Shorter days and colder mornings and evenings are the sure signs that winter is well on its way. Like many older adults, your parent may notice his or her house becoming colder than before as uneven window frames and doors let the cooler air inside the home.

5 Elderly Care Activities to Promote Brain Health in Suffield, CT

Through elderly care, there are many things that people can do that will promote positive health for the elderly individual. When it comes to brain health, the brain is a muscle and just like any other muscle in the body it requires exercise. However, as we age, we may place less focus on getting the brain the amount of exercise it needs.

The more exercise at the brain gets, the better it is going to be for the individual, regardless of their age. When the brain gets exercise, it can promote a positive mental state, better emotional health and well-being, and it can delay memory loss. It can even have an effect of reversing certain types of memory loss.

Mom’s Dentures Fell Out! Senior Care near Farmington, CT

Oral care is crucial for anyone of any age. When we are children, we are told to brush our teeth when we wake up and before we go to bed. Most families make brushing their teeth a ritual as a get ready to go to bed. Of course, most children are reluctant to even do this simple activity and rush through it just to get done. But what about for the senior who may require some type of personal care at home?

Many elderly individuals who rely on dentures now don’t believe that they still have to focus on proper oral or dental care. After all, when you don’t have any teeth, why would you even have to consider taking care of your oral health?

Learn to Take a Break, and that Help is out there, just Ask!

By Sandra Sergeant on September 23, 2014

One Daughter’s Decision to Lean on Home Care Services in Suffield, CT to Get a Much-Needed Break

It was a Saturday afternoon when I first realized that I was burning my proverbial candle at ‘both ends’ with the care I was providing to my elderly father. I was what you might call a ‘reluctant’ family caregiver, but I also knew that without my support, my father would probably have fallen or been seriously hurt some other way a long time ago.

I was working a full-time and part-time job while also caring for him. Fortunately my own children were grown and out of the house; they were also living across the country by now, so I didn’t have any real support. I’m a divorcee and have no relationship right now. However, I was burning out just trying to be there for my father and I knew I couldn’t keep this routine up. That’s when I stumbled upon the notion of home care services.

Caregivers near Greenwich, CT – Health Checkups Seniors Should Receive Regularly

By Sandra Sergeant on August 20, 2014

Regular checkups are important for Americans of all ages and seniors are no exception. These checkups should be scheduled and calendared in so they are not forgotten. An annual checkup by

your family doctor is the minimum that should be done. Medicare covers the cost of most routine tests.

Here are some of the things that should be checked on a routine basis:

Blood pressure. It’s important to have a baseline so if any changes occur in your blood pressure your doctor has something to compare it to. It’s suggested if your blood pressure is normal to have it checked yearly. If it isn’t normal, ask your doctor how often it needs to be checked.

The versatile zucchini is a summer squash that is a prolific producer. Most of the time, this is a good thing. But when you plant too much zucchini or forget to pick them for a few days, you can quickly find yourself with too many overgrown squash and wondering what to do with them.

It’s suggested the best size to pick zucchini is small or medium for the best flavor. The ones that grow too large become mealy and stringy and don’t have a pleasant texture. However, they can be seeded and grated and frozen without blanching, to use in your favorite zucchini nut bread recipe or zucchini chocolate cake recipe.

If you are caring for an elderly individual, you should find ways to make the process as comfortable for them as possible. While you may be uncomfortable with some aspects of elder care, you need to consider what the patient is going through as well.

For millions of women, their hair and how it’s styled is an important part of their appearance and that doesn’t change just because they require some extra help around the house, or getting into and out of the shower. However, because of their limitations, they may not get the opportunity to tend to their hair the way that they used to, and this could lead to some feelings of being unattractive, or not quite feeling right.

Why You Should Know about First Aid as a Caregiver in Farmington CT?

By Sandra Sergeant on June 30, 2014

While it may be required within some home care agencies to know first aid as a caregiver, what about when you are hired independently, or when you are caring for a family member? Is it something that you should look into?

The answer is simple: yes. While you will hopefully never have to rely on first aid for any injuries or mishaps, they can and often do happen. If you’re not prepared, if you don’t know what to do in order to treat a burn, a cut, or when someone falls, then you could end up panicking.

Set Your Boundaries when it Comes to Elder Care near Avon, CT

By Sandra Sergeant on June 24, 2014

The moment that you take on the responsibility of providing elder care for someone, you might be putting your own health and life at risk. This does not mean that you’re in danger and that you shouldn’t even think about elderly home care.

It means that far too many people, especially family caregivers, put the needs of their elderly loved one, or the patient, ahead of their own needs, even their own health.

It’s important that you establish boundaries when you’re going to be providing elder care.

What kind of boundaries should you set?

One of the most important things to do is to determine when during the day you’re going to be available to the elderly patient. If you are going to make yourself available during the morning for an hour before you go to work and for a couple of hours in the evening on your way home, that’s fine. Just make sure that you establish solid hours, such as between 7am and 8am, then 6pm to 8pm.

Can Home Care Services Help Cure Loneliness for Mom near Greenwich CT?

By Sandra Sergeant on June 16, 2014

For those who are concerned that their elderly parent, such as their mother, is lonely while living at home alone, they might be trying to figure out what they can do for them. One idea that some people have is to hire home care services.

The basic idea is that when someone, an in home care provider comes to their mother’s house to check on them, to support them, and to be there with them, it will help to alleviate some of the loneliness that they believe their mother is feeling.

If you notice that your mother is lonely, advanced in years, and you’re concerned about her, does it make sense to hire an in home care provider solely for the purpose of keeping her company?

The short, simple answer is no, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t or shouldn’t. Home care services is intended to provide support for those elderly individuals who are in need, who may be struggling to tend to their own care, or who may be at risk of injury or an illness because they are living at home.

Senior Care West Hartford, CT: Small Gardening for Seniors

By Sandra Sergeant on June 4, 2014

The late spring and early summer is the perfect time to help your elderly loved one get out of the house more often. It’s warmed up from winter, but the heat of mid-summer hasn’t hit yet. Isolation and loneliness can set in when your senior ages at home. Even for elderly people who

aren’t mobility challenged, it can be hard to get them outside for enough sunshine and social activity. What most seniors don’t realize is that this is just as important to their mental and physical health as eating well and exercising. The human body is made to sleep at night and be awake in the day, to take in Vitamin D from the sun, and to find meaningful connections with other people.

How Relying on Neighbors can Improve Senior Care near Simsbury CT

Not all neighbors are the kind that you see on family friendly television programs. Sure, there are plenty of people throughout the country who have strong bonds with the people living next to them. One problem that comes between them and everything changes. Yet relying on neighbors can help to improve senior care.

If your elderly loved one has been living next door to his or her neighbors for years, and if they have built a strong bond between them, then this would be a good opportunity to talk to them about checking in on your loved one from time to time.

Neighbors usually begin to understand one another, their habits, their tendencies, at least as far as being outside is concerned. They may even spend a lot of time going over and visiting with their neighbors during the day, checking in on them, and asking if they need anything.

When You Don’t Want to Provide Elder Care to Mom Anymore near Farmington CT

By Sandra Sergeant on May 13, 2014

“ A Family Caregiver’s Story near Farmington CT”

At first, Jessica based her assumptions on some simple conversations that she had with her mother. She realized that her mother was having some trouble doing the laundry and making herself a nice, healthy meal. Her mother was living alone, was approaching 80 years old, and it seemed like an ideal situation where she could spend more quality time with her mother, and be there for her.

However, during the past several months, her mother seemed to need more help, would begin calling Jessica while she was at work because she couldn’t find the remote control for the TV, or because she had some other ‘emergency’ that didn’t turn out to be an emergency.

Home Care Avon CT: May is Chocolate Custard Month

By Sandra Sergeant on May 6, 2014

Custard dates as far back as the Roman times or even before. They would either be savory or sweet. The Romans didn’t have vanilla so they usually made savory custards with added ground pepper. By the time the Middle Ages rolled around, custard was being used for flan or pie filling. By the 1500s custard had become its own dish.

Custard does take a little bit of work, but it is well worth the effort. With May being chocolate custard month, it’s a great opportunity to try your hand at making it. You can celebrate with your elderly loved one. On a day that it’s your turn to do the caregiving and her in-home care provider has a day off, you and your mom could try making chocolate custard together.

Elder Care in Stamford CT and Weight Loss: Can Nutritional Drinks and Shakes Help?

By Sandra Sergeant on April 16, 2014

Malnutrition in seniors due to lack of eating is a serious but common problem. As an elder care provider, you should know that losing interest in food is not a normal part of aging. It is

important to get to the bottom of what is causing this behavior. In the meantime, you may think that giving your loved one a nutritional drink, or shake is enough when they refuse food. However, you might want to think twice about using nutritional drinks or shakes to replace food.Elder Care Stamford CT

Elderly home care providers will often reach for a nutrition supplement drink when their loved one refuses to eat thinking that this will provide the nutrients they need. Experts say this isn’t the case and drinks like ensure or boost should not be used to replace meals. Using nutrition drinks between meals or as a way to add calories to your loved one’s diet are okay but should not be considered as a meal replacement.

Elderly Care in West Hartford CT: 7 Ways to Reduce Tooth Sensitivity

By Sandra Sergeant on April 7, 2014

Elders who still have their natural teeth can experience tooth sensitivity when dentin becomes exposed due to receding gums. When a hot or cold temperature or sweet food comes in contact with the exposed roots or nerves of the tooth, it produces the pain associated with sensitivity.

Here are the 7 ways to reduce sensitivity:

  1. Maintaining good oral hygiene is one of the best ways to keep the teeth in good shape and not prone to being sensitive. Your loved one’s elderly care providers can make sure they are brushing and flossing each day, as well as going regularly to their dentist for cleanings and checkups.

  2. Being careful not to eat highly acid foods which play a role in tooth enamel decay. They can also aggravate the symptoms associated with sensitivity.

Senior Care Greenwich CT: Essentials of Good Nutrition

By Sandra Sergeant on February 26, 2014

Many elderly people who are living alone do not eat a healthy diet. There may be several reasons contributing to this unfortunate circumstance. An elderly person’s body needs an adequate amount of nutrients and fiber.

Some of the reasons contributing to poor eating habits:

  •  The elderly senior doesn’t have enough money to buy nutritious food

  •  There are transportation problems

  •  They may be too scared to go out of the house alone

  •  In the winter time the streets could be slippery or covered with snow

  •  They may be afraid of being bumped or knocked over if the store is busy or crowded

  •  Eating has lost its pleasure and become more of a chore

  •  They are lonely. Having no one to share a meal with, they lose interest in eating

Making Dental Care an Important Part of Senior Care in Stamford CT!

By Sandra Sergeant on February 18, 2014

Unfortunately, the loss of dental coverage for seniors after retirement puts the older population at a higher risk for oral health problems. Only about two percent of American seniors have dental insurance.Senior Care Stamford CT

Under Obamacare, this country is looking to be able to receive affordable health care, but neither Obamacare or basic Medicare provide dental coverage for routine dental care such as checkups, cleanings, and fillings. Nick was told that his father should have some form of home care services to assist him with basic care needs at home. This came from his father’s doctor after his father was admitted to the hospital for pneumonia. Talking to Mom about Elder Care in Glastonbury CT: First Steps

By Sandra Sergeant on January 27, 2014

(A story)

On the drive back to your mother’s house from the doctor, the silence permeated just about every pore. She kept her attention focused on the world, passing cars, the road rolling under the spinning wheels, and she avoided looking at you. Maybe she knew what you were going to say. Maybe she worried about what you might not say. You drop her off at home, tell her you’ll call her in the morning, and then drive yourself home thinking about one thing: elder care.Elder Care Glastonbury CT

Your mother has always been a strong and independent woman. She doesn’t like to ask for help, and that got her in trouble a couple of years ago when she slipped and fell from the stepladder, leading to a broken collar bone and sprained knee. It took her a while to recover from that injury, but now her doctor has recommended that she have home care for the elderly.

Patience is the Virtue – Home Care Services in Farmington CT

By Sandra Sergeant on January 21, 2014

(A Story)

I didn’t think much about patience in my life until my mother needed home care services. For me, I wanted things done quickly and if they weren’t working out, then I would lose my patience relatively quickly. My mother had always been the person to tell me to calm down, take my time, and that when it was right time, everything would work out the way it is supposed to.Home Care Services Farmington CT

I simply never shared her positive nature; I needed things to get done as quickly as possible, so when she fell and broke her leg, and other health related issues began to arise as a result, I knew that something had to change. Ever since my father passed away five years ago, I thought about the prospect of in home health care services for her, but she seemed to do fairly well on her own. Then she slipped going down the stairs, and that was when everything started to change. Not just for her, either.

Hiring a Caregiver in Avon CT: Why Research is More Important than Your Gut Instinct!

By Sandra Sergeant on January 15, 2014

(A story)

When I was getting ready to hire a caregiver for my father, I thought I knew everything that there was to know about this level of care. After all, I was a successful business executive. You couldn’t tell me anything that I didn’t already know, and I had hired plenty of people through the years. I knew what I was doing.

I also figured that I didn’t need to consider hiring through an agency because, after all, why wouldn’t I want to save some money that those agencies charge, and just give some extra to the private, independent contractor home care provider? I talked to more than half a dozen potential caregivers for my father over a three-week period. Two of them seemed as though they would

be ideal.

Keeping Your Elderly Loved One Safe on the Road This Winter-Senior Care in Simsbury CT

By Sandra Sergeant on December 27, 2013

Now, that winter has arrived this year, the weather is going to start getting cold, and bad. This can mean that the roads can be really difficult to travel on with all of the ice, and snow that can get in the way. If you have an elderly loved one who is still allowed to drive on the road, you know how worrisome the whole situation can be. You want to make sure that they are still able

to get to all of their engagements, and appointments, but if you do not have the time to run them yourself, they might just go out on the road on their own. This can lead to accidents occurring to your loved one. Rather than trusting your elderly loved ones vision and mental capabilities in the bad weather, consider senior care from home care services to assist your loved one with getting where they need to be this winter safely.

“That’s NOT What I Said!” – When being a Caregiver in Glastonbury CT Hurts the Relationship!

By Sandra Sergeant on December 19, 2013

(A story)

Lisa and her mother were generally considered close when she was growing up. Lisa went off to college, got married, and had her own family. She ended up living in another state, and she didn’t get to see her mother as much as she would like. As her children got older, she divorced and then eventually moved back to where she grew up, partly to be close to her mother, but also because she felt comfortable there, and safe. When her mother was ill, she thought it was only natural that she would step up to be the primary caregiver for her.Caregivers Glastonbury CT

Over the months, Lisa realized that providing home care for her mother was putting pressure on the entire relationship. It seemed that anything she told her mother was the wrong thing, and that anything she suggested would just be ignored. She wanted her mother to recover from her illness, and she wanted her to be safe, but the fighting grew stronger and more intense as the weeks passed.

Senior Care in Greenwich CT: Dating and Knowing the

Boundaries

By Sandra Sergeant on December 11, 2013

(A Story from a friend in CT) When I was young, my mother was always trying to tell me about who to date, what type of woman I should be interested in, and of course, who to avoid. When I was fifteen, I think I did everything in my power to go against her wishes, but in the end, she was right, and I was lucky to have had her advice; it led me to the woman of my dreams and the one I married more than 20 years ago.Senior Care Greenwich CT However, now it seems that the tables are turned slightly and there are things that we, as adult children, should certainly keep in mind when it comes to senior care, and our parents beginning to date again. I have to be honest. I never thought that my mother would ever consider dating again.

By Sandra Sergeant on December 5, 2013

Going for walks is one of the best ways for elderly individuals to get exercise. Exercise is important to maintain a high quality of health, and life. So what about an elderly loved one who is receiving home care services during the winter? Are walks still a good idea? Are they even safe?Home Care Services Suffield CT

As anyone who has gone for a brisk walk or run during the chill of winter can attest, the air affects the lungs differently when it’s cold out, rather than when it’s nice , sunny and warm. One of the first things that we notice when we step outside and try to get some exercise is that the cold air hits the lungs. For older patients who may not be in the best of health, this can lead to some serious health problems, including pneumonia.

Finding Peace with Elder Care in Greenwich CT

By Sandra Sergeant on November 13, 2013

Mandy had never wanted to call on elder care for her mother. She had always thought that if the time came where her mother would need elderly home care, it would just signal that she would lose her mother soon. It was a constant worry of hers that it eventually became an anxiety that haunted her most of the day, and well into the nights.

Her father had passed away more than ten years earlier and though her mother managed to get on with her life, she was living alone, and moving deep into her late seventies. Mandy’s mother’s health slowly weakened over time, and she believe that contacting, or calling on the assistance of home care for elderly loved ones was somehow acceptance of the fact that he mother would soon be gone as well.

Senior Care in Suffield CT: – Caring for an Elderly Parent Teaches Us About Making Family Members Feel Needed and Wanted

By Sandra Sergeant on November 7, 2013

One of the difficult issues with seniors is making sure that they still feel needed and useful to their children. So it is important that they are included in family activities that they are still capable of doing. If they are constantly left out they may begin to have feelings of resentment and/or may start feeling depressed and withdraw from participating. So it is important that the family caregivers learn how to make their senior parents feel loved, needed, and wanted by their family.

If you include your senior parent in your family themed activities they will feel that they are a big part of the family and they are needed to participate in these activities. If they are physically challenged plan some family activities that they can participate in even with their physical limitations.

An elderly person’s appetite changes as they age, there may even be times when they experience a loss of appetite. This is often due to medication or illness. Diabetes and Elder Care in Simsbury CT

By Sandra Sergeant on October 17, 2013

My father was diagnosed with diabetes more than twenty years ago, and had a stroke. I realized that he needed at the very least some form of elder care at home. I didn’t know whether this disease was going to make the process more difficult. After all, the last thing I wanted to do was worry about how much sugar he was getting, and whether his diet was right for him.

My mother had been the one who cooked his meals, and she knew all about his disease in ways that I would never know. My wife told me to hire home care for the elderly, but that wasn’t something I was ready to do yet; I thought I could provide the care he needed while he recovered from his stroke.
